Honorable Judge Theodis Preston Lewis departed this life at his
home in Chatham, Illinois February 17, 2025. He was born in Little
Rock, Arkansas and was the third of eight children. He graduated from
Horace Mann High School in 1966, and received a degree in l970 from
Illinois Institute of Technology, and from the law school at the University of
Illinois. In l974, he begin his legal career as an assistant Attorney General
for the State of Illinois and made many moves in the legal field, and was
appointed in 1991 to the Seventh Judicial Circuit of Illinois as its first
Black Judge. He believe in using the bench to give opportunities for people
to grow and change.
After making a profession of faith in Jesus Christ as a child, Theodis
remained deeply religious all his life.
Theodis is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy Lewis, his four children,
Ayanna, Preston (Moc), Dara, and Jori Lewis (Gerard Gabayen); his two
grandchildren, Kristina and McKenzie Drake; as well as his siblings,
Myrle Lewis Mclvor of Altanta, Georgia, Dr. Beverly Lewis of Williamston, North
Carolina, Kenneth (Yolanda) Lewis of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Uncle,
William T. (Ira Jean) Lewis of Scott, Arkansas, one aunt, Lorene (Bill) Gladney of
Little Rock, Arkansas, a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Angelo Charles Lewis, and Melvin Lewis.
